Western Digital Hit Cyber Attack, 10 TB of customer data was stolen by hackers

Hackers have stolen approximately 10 TB of data from data storage leader Western Digital, allegedly containing customer information.

According to reports, the hackers demanded a ransom of “at least 8 figures” in exchange for not disclosing the stolen information online.

One of the hackers spoke to TechCrunch and provided details about the data breach.

“The hacker shared a file that was digitally signed with Western Digital’s code signing certificate, indicating that they can now digitally sign files to impersonate Western Digital,” the report states.

The hackers also shared the alleged phone numbers of several company executives.

They were also able to steal data from the company’s SAP Backoffice, a back-end interface that helps companies manage e-commerce data.

“We are the pests that broke your business. Maybe your attention is needed! Continue on this path and we will take revenge,” the hackers wrote in an email to Western Digital executives.

“All we need is a one-time payment, then we’ll leave your network and notify you of your vulnerabilities. No permanent damage done. But if there’s any attempt to disrupt us, our systems, or anything else. We’ll strike back,” the hackers wrote.

The company declined to comment on the hacker’s claims.

Western Digital said on April 3 that cybercriminals exfiltrated data from its systems during a “cyber breach.”

On March 26, Western Digital had discovered a network security breach related to its systems.

In connection with the ongoing event, an unauthorized third party accessed several of the company’s systems. After discovering the incident, the company took action and launched an investigation with the help of leading external security and forensics experts.

“This investigation is in its early stages and Western Digital is coordinating with law enforcement,” the company said in a statement.

As part of its remediation efforts, Western Digital worked to restore affected infrastructure and services.
